The Rhine System
The Halliwick Rhine System is one of the systems that is recognized by the International Halliwick Association (IHA).
The contents were developed by James McMillan during his stay in Switzerland ( 1975 - 1994 ). Based on earlier developments in Great-Britain, he worked out more sophisticated theories about "motor learning water in water" and applications of Halliwick in a variety of seriously affected populations.
This was also facilitated by the development of the so-called Halliwick Water Specific Therapy.
These "recent" developments form the basis for differences with other systems, recognized by the IHA.
It is taught mainly in the "Rhine-countries of Europe": Austria, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal and Switzerland. But also in e.g. Israel, Brazil, Korea, the USA, Poland and Colombia, this system is used.
In these countries, the Halliwick Concept is regarded as a post-graduate course for professionals in health care and sometimes endorsed by national associations of physiotherapy.
Professionals may come from: physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, sports therapy, social work, gymnastics, classroom teaching etc.
In courses, we try to achieve a standard, related to the professional knowledge of participants. This means that the Halliwick Concept can be described as a method of swimming and hydrotherapy, based on neurophysiological principles.
The teaching structure in the Rhine-System is based on two components of the Halliwick Concept:
- the Ten-Point-Programme
- Water Specific Therapy
The Water Specific Therapy is a therapeutic extension, which can be applied in a great variety of impairments of the locomotor system. This component of Halliwick is only taught is the Rhine-System.
